Job Description

 

The Gaels Success Program was created to help first-year students adjust to college life by providing additional support built into their schedules for the fall semester. They attend tutoring hours and CDS 1203: Academic Strategies and Skills. They are also assigned a Peer Mentor that can provide a student's perspective, help them get involved on campus, and learn about important resources. Peer Mentors serve as role models, referrals, and resources to students.

Each section of CDS 1203 is assigned 2 Peer Mentors who must be able to participate in each class session and lead a group discussion/activity each Friday. These classes are scheduled on Tues., Thurs. and Fridays at 9:00 or 10:00 am. When you apply, please specify which section(s) you would be available to sit in on.

 Essential Duties:

  • Meet weekly with the instructor to reflect on the previous lesson and prepare for the upcoming class.
  • Lead weekly discussions on Fridays.
  • Acquaint new students with campus services, policies, activities, and facilities. Help students identify support systems and resources.
  • Encourage new students to fully participate in the College environment.
  • Assist new students with understanding academic expectations, and the mission of the College.
  • Promote active and collaborative learning, and encourage curiosity and question-asking.
  • Participate in the evaluation process of the peer mentor program which includes ongoing program communication with Program Coordinators, formal written feedback at the end of the term, and attendance at debriefing sessions.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.
Job Requirements

 

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Must be in good academic and disciplinary standing.
  • Attend and actively participate in designated MANDATORY training sessions.
  • Attend events with new student as deemed necessary (Tour of campus, Career Fair, Involvement Fair)
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Iona College mission, curriculum, resources and expectations.
  • Excellent organizational, communication (written and verbal), time management and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with a team and independently, with limited direct supervision.
  • Availability to participate in course section(s) on Tues., Thurs. and Fridays at 9:00 or 10:00 am.
  • Availability to participate in group discussions as well as one-on-one conversations with students you are assigned.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; positive attitude; ability to multitask; self-motivated; enjoys working with others; and willing to provide immediate information/support for students as an academic and campus resources
