Job Description

Orientation Leaders play a vital role in the transition of new students and their families to Iona College during Summer Orientation in June and August, Welcome Days at the start of the school year, Transfer Orientation in January and through both formal and informal activities through the entire first year experience. They serve as not only role models to the incoming students, but also as major resources for support and information. They are responsible for conveying information about the college’s Christian Brothers values and institutional mission, as well as its unique culture, traditions and community. In addition, they serve as a peer mentor to provide the students with those mentorship relationships early in their time at Iona. This is a student leader paid stipend position; work-study eligible and non-work study students are welcome to apply.

Orientation Leaders will: 

  • ·   Exude school spirit and demonstrate Gael Pride throughout all training and orientation sessions 
  • ·   Serve as a representative of the Iona College 
  • ·  Serve as a peer mentor to the incoming students throughout orientation, the summer, Welcome Days and their first year at Iona 
  • · Act as an academic and social role model for current and incoming students 
  • · Participate in all trainings  
  • ·  Lead discussion groups with students, including icebreakers and other engaging group activities 
  • ·  Facilitate conversations about academic and social opportunities on-campus, as well as resources available   
  • · Conduct thorough campus tours with extensive knowledge of various buildings/areas on-campus 
  • ·  Troubleshooting and problem solving as needed 
  • · Work closely as a team with fellow orientation leaders, staff, and other campus constituents to execute successful orientation sessions 
  • ·  Being positive, motivating each other and the new students 
  • ·  Model good behavior and high values at all times

  • Forming valuable relationships with fellow orientation leaders and faculty/staff 
  • Developing a peer mentor relationship with incoming students 
  • Valuable leadership development, including, but not limited to team work, communication, conflict management, public speaking, etc.  

 

Terms of Employment: 

  • Must be able to come to campus prior to orientation leader training 
  • Must be able to attend all trainings and prep sessions  
  • Must be able to attend all orientation sessions – June 12-13, June 15-16, June 21-22, and Welcome Day on August 28th
  • Various events, activities and trainings throughout the year (Killian’s Kickoff, Recruitment, etc.) 
  • Abide by the Iona University Code of Conduct and remain in good academic & disciplinary standing throughout training, orientation sessions, and the year 
  • Remain positive and excited throughout all related activities  

Important Mandatory Dates for all selected Orientation Leaders:

  • To be present at all training sessions (*more detailed/finalized scheduled to follow upon hire*):
  • June 5 – June 9, 2024
  • June14, 2024
  • June 21, 2024
  • August 21 – August 27, 2024
  • To be present at the below summer overnight sessions
    • Orientation #1: June 12 – June 13
    • Orientation #2: June 15 – June 16
    • Orientation #3: June 21 – June 22
  • Please not that hired applicants have the choice between participating in all three sessions or two of the three sessions
    • Session 1, Session 2, and Session 3
    • Session 1 and Session 3
    • Session 2 and Session 3
  • Assist with Welcome Days & Killian’s Kickoff
    • Welcome Days: August 28 & August 29
      • Killian’s Kickoff: August 30 – September 30 (varying dates/responsibilities – details to follow)
  • Mentor a group of new students serving as an OL/Peer Advisor
  • Communicate with your group at various points throughout the summer and fall semester
  • Reflect Iona’s Mission in a positive light
  • Embrace students into the Iona Community and help them get involved
Job Requirements

Selection Criteria include: 

 

·         Must be good academic and disciplinary standing 

·         Strongly encourage involvement in the Iona University community (i.e. clubs/organizations, research, service, etc.) 

·         Ability to work with a diverse group of students 

·         Must be a good communicator, be flexible, and able to think on their feet 

·         Must be punctual, dependable, and dedicated 

·         Must be positive, enthusiastic, and a role model for their peers 

·         Possesses strong leadership qualities 

·         Take initiative on projects and tasks; able to self-direct 

·         Works well as a member of a small and large group
